A Thailand Experience, by Daniel Jaen

Just over six months ago, just after I had finished the season working, my girlfriend and I thought we had earned ourselves a well deserved holiday in a warm tropical place as we hadn’t had any summer vacation. We thought hard about where and how to plan such a long trip as we wanted to go for roughly a month, to get the full experience. Some friends of mine had been to Thailand recently and all they had were great comments for the country and people. So, it was official, we decided on Thailand.

First of all, we bought the flights, which were not that expensive considering Thailand is so far away. Then, we started planning… Where to begin? We knew we were landing in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, which is located in the middle of the country and decided we would head North first and then fly down to the South for the last two weeks of the trip. Most of the places to stay in Thailand are hostels or rooms you can rent at a very low price, which is why we opted to find and choose the hotel as we arrived to the different locations.

We packed our bags and were ready to start the adventure that lay ahead of us. Once we landed in Bangkok, the first thing that hit us was the amount of people there are, both on the streets and on the roads, there is a lot of humidity in Thailand, which meant it was also very hot. I am a big food fan and Thailand did not disappoint in that aspect, the street food there is some of the tastiest I have ever had, and the best thing about it… it’s so CHEAP! We continued our trip visiting temples, riding in tuc tuc’s, and enjoying the night markets.

The north of Thailand was so different from the big busy city of Bangkok, and we loved the nature of it. There was much more vegetation and we considered it to be more calm. We fed elephants, rode on mopeds and of course, kept eating all the delicious food they had to offer. Night life is a big thing in Thailand as it is so hot during the day and the sun burns down on you, everyone comes out at night.

After a short flight to the South it was all about finding the best beaches to relax on, we spent a few days discovering the islands and lounging around on the beach. The water there is a clear and turquoise color and is a pleasure to swim in. We decided to do a diving course, as Thailand is known to have amazing sea life.

A few years ago most of us would not have chosen Thailand as one of our holiday destinations and I think that over the years it has become a very popular tourist destination. This means you have to be prepared to be in crowded places and it’s not always easy to find a quiet spot. Some of Thailand’s wonders have been worn down by the mass of tourists such as Maya beach, which had to be closed down to be able to restore its nature.

Overall, the trip was a lifetime experience and I would definitely recommend Thailand to anyone who asks me.
