LUGO: AN ANCIENT PLACE WHERE YOU CAN EAT FOR FREE by Vanesa Alvariño

Lugo is a small city in the North-West of Spain. It is the capital of one of the 50 provinces which make Spain; it is called the same way, Lugo. It is a very dynamic place, plenty of diverse people, from farmers to undergraduates, as well as of a very large Islamic immigrant population, something not very common in Galicia.

Lugo has prominent monuments. In fact, Lugo it is the most ancient city in Galicia, founded in 25 B.C. by the Romans. Therefore, it is full of Roman buildings such as baths, bridges, mosaics... Moreover, Lugo has a worldwide treasury: without doubts, its biggest attraction is The Roman Wall, declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. It is the only wall which keeps its original perimeters. Going over it you can see the old city up, like a sightseeing tour. Also, you can visit other interesting and important monuments from other times, like Saints Mary Cathedral declared World Heritage Site too.

If you like shopping, you are lucky. Lugo has three shopping centres, with a large variety of supermarkets and shops where you can buy clothes, electronic gadgets, and everything you are looking for. Near the Cathedral you can visit small old shops where you can buy souvenirs, if you want.

If you love trying local food, Lugo has a healthy “tapeos” live. With every drink you order after eleven in the morning you get “pinchos” for free. You find two kinds: on the one hand, the kitchen ones, where the staff asks you to choose one from a list and on the other hand, the bar ones, where you can eat as much as you want, and which are located on the bar. Besides, drinks are cheaper than in other cities. It goes on through the night. Regarding nightlife, there are two kinds: On one side, on Thursday night students go out in town, and on the other, on Fridays and Saturdays local people go round the bars and clubs. Of special mention are Arde Lucus and San Froilan Festivals. The first one is celebrated in the middle of June, and the second one starts each 4th of October; on these dates Lugo is overrun with people, but you can enjoy a lot of activities and concerts, and eat the fantastic Galician “Pulpo a Feira” at the famous San Froilan Casetas´.

Definitely, Lugo is a pleasant city where you can enjoy shopping, learn a lot about the Romans and get the best of Galician food. It is very cheap and comfortable to go down, so it makes an ideal plan for families.
