THE CANARY ISLANDS, MY LITTLE PARADISE. By Adrian Medina Mendoza

Hello and welcome to my Little Paradise. Many people think that Canary Islands are only beaches and sun, but I’m sorry, this is the biggest mistake you can think of.

I was born in Gran Canaria forty years ago and I have visited each Canary Island (eight islands if you don’t know, because some years ago “La Graciosa” was recognized as the eighth Island). I visited each Island’s nook and I assure you that Islands are more than you think. Here in Canarias, we usually say that we live in a tiny continent. I will explain to you some characteristics about the Islands.

Lanzarote: This is my favourite Island. You can find big lava plains. Especially in the South, the view is so inhospitable but extremely beautiful. You have perfectly guided excursions between lava plains, and the houses all around the Island are highly influenced by Cesar Manrique, great artist of painting and architecture.

Fuerteventura: If you like any sea-related sport, this is your Island. Weather conditions are very conducive for Windsurf, kite surf, paddle surf, etc., all year. Here, many World Championships were celebrated (The famous wind surf champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck lived here for many years). Also, you can meet the famous “Majorera Goat”.

Gran Canaria: I could tell you hundreds and hundreds of characteristics about my Island. For example, you can see the Maspalomas’s sun dunes, the popular Roque Nublo or the unique Gothic style Basilica in Gran Canaria, in Arucas. Also, you will enjoy swimming in one of the more than 100 beaches or coves all around the Island.

Tenerife: The other Big Island.  Tenerife and Gran Canaria are both the clear example when we speak about tiny continents. The big touristic inviting is The Teide, of course. He is the majestic king that reigns on the Canary Islands. If you climb to him or take the cableway and the sky is very clean, you can see all Islands! Don’t you think that it is incredible?

La Gomera: One of the three small occidental Islands. You will stay with your mouth open when you see its spectaculars ravines. Also, at the top you will enter a damp little forest. The vegetation is so deep that at twelve in the morning you will think is at night. It is fantastic.

La Palma: Here we have our particular jungle. Northern half of the Island is vegetation. La Palma is one of the places where it rains the most. In the other hand, at the south of the Island you have the volcanic panoramic with the last eruption in the Canary Islands, in the seventies. One more curiosity, every five years you can enjoy the “Pygmy Dance”. It is a amazing show within “The Virgin of the Snow” celebration.

El Hierro: Currently I think that it is one the most famous Islands in Spain due to the original series of Movistar “Hierro”. If you want take a pre view of the Island, watch the series. The series takes very realistic images about all the typical points in the Island. After watching the series you can come here. I guarantee you that you will say: Oh my God! Really, am I here?

La Graciosa: At last, the newest recognized Island. La Graciosa depends politically of Lanzarote. There you will travel to a virgin place without cars, trucks, asphalt, and pollution and with sandy streets. It is amazing. You can walk or ride mountain bicycle to some of the beautiful corners in the Island. One last piece of information, to arrive to La Graciosa you need travel first to Lanzarote, because it hasn’t an airport or  a big harbor. You must take a small boat from Orzola, at the north of Lanzarote.

In conclusion, so many places with different characteristics that you would need hundreds and hundreds of kilometers for visiting them all around the world, and you have them, only a few hours away from your house, here, in the Canary Islands. Come and meet us, you will not regret it.
