HOW TO EXPERIENCE PETRA AS A LOCAL, by Inas ANANOU IBRAHIM

Have you ever heard about Petra? This archaeological city located in Southern Jordan is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. If you have the chance to visit it, its history, landscapes and reddish colours will make you fall in love with its beauty. Anyway, in this post I won't be explaining the history and culture of this incredible emplacement, but I will give you some tips to experience one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world as a local.

First of all, don't forget to buy your tickets online! If you try to purchase the entrance to the site on-site it will be you between 20 and 30 euros more expensive than on the Internet. The best way to explore the country's secret pearls, aside from Petra, will be acquiring a “Jordan Pass”. This ticket will allow you to have a visa and the entrance to more than 20 emplacements in the four coins of Jordan for only 100 euros.

The second point important thing is to bring your own food or to buy it from outside the emplacement. Jordan is an excellent gastronomic destination, don't ruin this image by buying a disgusting sandwich instead of having falafel supplies in your backpack. I would recommend you to grab your own beverages from home, if you don't want to pay three times the price of a water bottle.

The third piece of advice that I can provide you may seem strange at first, but it would make more sense afterwards. Don't follow the original path through the city, do it afterwards! If you want to experience to the maximum take a car and park in the opposite part of the location or what is the same: in the exit. The recommended route is shorter, as people usually don't get till the end; yet there are amazing landscapes worth seeing away from the crowds.

What about the fourth suggestion? Talk to locals! The only way to get to know better a place is by chatting with its inhabitants. Jordanian people are really nice, and they would certainly invite you to have a tea with them and to show you their culture.

And last but not least! Do not forget to ride a horse or a donkey in Petra. I wouldn't say it is the most comfortable means of transport but it is certainly the most genuine one!
